When you fire off an article to a revenue sharing site, you have absolutely no idea what you’ll make. Those of us who actually rely upon our earnings to pay the bills should be acutely aware of what we’re making and how much time/effort/etc. If you feel an overwhelming urge to express yourself on a pet topic and think you might expand your audience via use of a revshare site, you might also make a little dough while standing on principle. If you’re writing for a hobby and aren’t actually worried about using the income you generate to pay the bills, revenue sharing sites may occasionally provide you with a little pocket money. Though some revshare sites (like Associated Content) may offer a nominal up-front payment, the criticisms still tend to stick. While sites like Squidoo and Hubpages may have additional utility to some Internet marketers, many writers utilize them as “pure” revshare outlets, as well. That includes a massive number of sites including Associated Content, Bukisa, Infobarrel and others. Note: Just to be clear, I’m talking about sites that will accept your article submissions and will subsequently pay you based on a percentage of ad revenue the article generates, the number of page views it attracts or some other secret formula. Here are four reasons freelancers shouldn’t be contributing to revenue sharing sites–and why there are occasional exceptions to the anti-revshare rule. I’d hate to think that my story of an exception to the rule would encourage anyone to dive headfirst into the revshare waters. However, we can't help but noticing a common thread (with few exceptions) among the complainants: a failure to create their own platforms, as an alternative or a backup plan, to avoid being at the mercy of a free platform's whimsical policies, in the first place. Whoever thinks that content-publishing is just a simple matter of writing and publishing articles is in for a rude awakening, after reading your article. A must-read for anyone who is contemplating joining a free content-publishing platform such as Squidoo, in order to be made aware, beforehand, of the intricacies, machination, and manipulation that such endeavor entails. Also their filters are problematic, even the best of lensmasters' lenses get locked for no apparent reason. If you do not reach their new payment threshold within a year, your money will go to charity. Just deleted my account there after three years. I wouldn't put a bunch of lenses up at one time instead, feel the water a bit and see how your first few lenses fair. If you choose to give Squidoo a try, I suggest that you make sure your lens has great SEO and is promoted well because you might not see a lot of traffic otherwise.
There was a little bit of a surge during the holidays, but that quickly went away once the new year came. I continue to monitor traffic on Quantcast and have seen no big changes in traffic. Although I have faith that the site will eventually recover, I don't see this happening anytime soon. I'm a big advocate for having people explore things themselves before deciding whether something is right for them or not, but I must say that I'm having a difficult time getting my hopes up for Squidoo at the moment.
